New Year’s Resolution is OUT, Strategic Planning is IN

WHEN I was still a student I would always expect that when we return to school after the Christmas break, our English teacher or our class adviser would ask us to write our resolutions for the new year. It has become an annual tradition that increasingly became meaningless because the moment we submit our paper, we stopped thinking about it. Moreover, since those are just banner statements with no clear objectives, they end up dissipating into thin air.

So, instead of writing a new year’s resolution, The Teacher’s Notebook recommends drafting a strategic plan for the new year. Without a clear plan, the year 2011 would just be another 365 and 1/4 days that will come and go unnoticed.

This is what my strategic plan for the the year 2011 looks like:

1. Systematize the planning of instruction and recording and tracking of students’ academic performance a. Clean up my workspace and get rid of unwanted stuff cleaning materials January 2, 2011 My workspace should have been spic-and-span
b. Organize my books, class records, lesson plan books, instructional materials, students’ outputs boxes, self-adhesive labels January 2, 2011 All the stuff in my workspace should have been properly sorted and labelled
c. Make sure that all the students’ outputs are recorded in my computer computers, files of students’ records January 2, 2011 Soft copies of students records should match those in my class records
d. Update my lesson plan book and class records lesson plan book, class records (soft and hard copy) Weekly from January to March, and from June to December My lesson plan book and class records should have been updated
2. Complete the academic requirement for my Master’s Degree a. Attend my classes religiously and submit all the required output school supply, fare January to March, and June to October I should have attended at least 80% of the school days and submitted all the requirements
b. Enroll in the remaining course tuition and other fees, school records May 2011 I should have enrolled in the first semester of SY 2011-2012
c. Review for and Take the Comprehensive Exam fees, school records October 2011 I should have passed the Comprehensive Exam with above average rating
3. Apply for Post-Graduate Scholarship Grants/Fellowships a. Search for granting institutions online computer, net connection January-June 2011 I should have a list of probable sponsoring institutions
b. Send application papers and other requirements to sponsoring institutions scholastic records June to November 2011 I should have mailed my application papers and other requirements to sponsoring institutions

Those are just three of the things that I hope to accomplish this year. There are still others but I could not share them in this blog. I hope that the year 2011 would be a fruitful year for me, for my students, and for you who are reading this blog. God bless us all!
